Christian Louboutin Goes to the Dolls

For the most iconic and stylish doll around, it was no wonder that Barbie decided to finally team up with famed shoe designer Christian Louboutin. From the looks of the newly-reinvented doll and her photo book diary, Louboutin didn’t let our girl down.
“Barbie has a long history of working with various designers and artists who use Barbie as a muse… It was a natural for Barbie, not only with her fashion heritage, but also because of her passion for shoes. She has a billion shoes and we needed to do something special for her shoe collection,” said Stephanie Cota, senior vice president of marketing of Barbie brands at Mattel.
Read More Serving as a yearlong “godfather” to Barbie, Louboutin designed the physical look of the doll, in addition to re-stocking her closet and re-imagining her surroundings. Quite the perfectionist, Louboutin made it clear that Barbie, despite being over fifty years-old, wasn’t her best until he came along: “She needed great shoes, a thinner ankle and, to me, as I’m obsessed with feet, a foot more curved.” After causing a bit of an uproar over the “thinner ankle” comment (really?), Louboutin later added, “Barbie’s foot has always been shaped less ‘curvy’ than the rest of her perfect body. I just added my little science to Barbie and I’ve been proud to serve her. But fat ankles she didn’t have, she just could have had thinner ankles. That’s all.” Each of the three Louboutin-designed dolls come complete with a customized designer box, along with (of course) four pairs of stylish shoes. Among the upcoming themes the designer has in mind for her? A jewel thief, safari-themed, and a Cannes Film Festival attendee—quite the range! The diary, sold separately for $40 around when jewel thief-themed Barbie hits online stores, is titled “My Year in Paris With Christian Louboutin.” The book will feature photos of Barbie shopping and spending time with the designer (uh-oh, where ever could Ken be?). Both the doll and diary are due in December.
