Tom Ford Moves Forward With Womenswear Plans

Upon completing his foray into film, Tom Ford is now venturing into womenswear.
The designer has reportedly started recruiting accessories specialists and is putting together a design team for a return to the ladies clothing market, his first foray into the area under his own name. Tom confirmed his intentions to move back toward womenswear last year, saying in October, “Financing is extremely expensive right now, so if we find financing in the right situation we’ll be able to start a women’s collection soon. If we don’t, we may have to wait a while.”
He warned, however, the project would take over a year to complete, adding, “It will take me 18 months when I start, because I have to hire the team, find the factories, put everything together and then get the stores ready so there’s a place for these clothes.”
Meanwhile, Tom - who has previously worked for Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent - dressed Oscars hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin for last night’s ceremony, which included a costume changed for Alec from a single-breasted tuxedo with grosgrain peak lapels, white pique front shirts and black grosgrain cummerbunds and bow ties to a navy blue, single-breasted tuxedo with a grosgrain peak lapel.
Colin Firth - who starred in Tom’s directorial debut film A Single Man for which he was nominated for the Best Actor award - was also dressed by the designer at the Oscars.

Roland Mouret Launches Rainbow Line

Roland Mouret’s “Rainbow” range for Net-A-Porter has been launched today.
The French designer - whose legendary moon dress was made famous by Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham - has teamed up with the London-based luxury online clothing store to create an exclusive brightly-colored range of dresses under his RM by Roland Mouret label.
The party styles include six mini-dresses and one mini-skirt with a luxurious silk appearance made from draped fabrics which effortlessly conceal lumps and bumps and result in an extremely flattering fit. The frocks can be bought at Net-A-Porter.
This is not the first time the iconic dress designer has worked on a range of fun party dresses. Last year, it was revealed Roland, 47, would team up with singer-turned-designer Victoria to create a limited edition range of little black dresses. Victoria first became a fan of Roland in 2006, when she was seen wearing his 50s-style Galaxy grey dress. The following year, she donned his skintight Moon dress in hot pink when her soccer star husband David made his first appearance for the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Milan Awards Dolce and Gabbana

Dolce and Gabbana are set to receive an award for their contribution to Milan.
The design duo - full names Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana - say they are “honored” after learning they will be given the Ambrogino D’oro, an annual award presented to citizens who have contributed meaningfully to the city.
“We are extremely honored and excited to receive this award. Milan is not only our city and where our home is, but also the place that allowed us to make our dream come true. Milan has given us a lot and we cannot be but happy that our work contributed to its well-being,” said Stefano.
The award takes its name from Milan’s patron saint, Saint Ambrogio, and is given out on the same day the saint is celebrated.
The duo are not the only designers to be recognized for their contributions to a city. Last week, Alber Elbaz’s was honoured for his cultural impact on Paris as creative director of Lanvin.
Mango Unveils Scarlett Johansson Ads
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Celebrities, News, Sales, Women
Never one to seem shy about her sex symbol status, Scarlett Johansson flaunts her petite, curvy self in her latest Mango ad campaign for Fall/Winter ‘09.
Shot in Los Angeles by famed fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti, Johansson poses against a myriad of grungy back drops, including a graffiti-stricken wall and trashy red leather couch (seen after the jump). There’s actually one shot in particular that looks strikingly similar to a Guess? jeans ad; however, the blinding yellow background in another image isn’t too pleasing, either—bright yellow fails to evoke a sense of Winter to me.
Despite my minor qualms, Scarlett looks hot.

Emma Watson Designs Line For People Tree
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrities, Fashion Designers, News, Men, Women
Let’s face it, an Emma Watson clothing range was always in the works ever since magazines and Karl Lagerfeld took the fashionista under their wing. It has finally arrived—and it’s an ethical one, too!
The Harry Potter actress has teamed up with People Tree for the new collection, which is aimed at people aged 16 to 24.
“I was excited by the idea of using fashion as a tool to alleviate poverty and knew it was something I could help make a difference with. I think young people like me are becoming increasingly aware of the humanitarian and environmental issues surrounding fast fashion and want to make good choices but there aren’t many options out there.”
Emma, who is the face of Burberry, has taken on the role of creative advisor for the new line (Lindsay Lohan?), which comprises cotton skirts, T-shirts, jersey garments and jewelery.
She tried to inject some of her own personal style into the pieces and used her favorite locations, including South France, London, and music festivals, as inspiration.
There are 26 women’s pieces and 15 men’s looks in the range, which is largely made from organic and fairly traded cotton. The collection is handmade by fair trade groups and helps people make money in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal.

Manolo Blahnik Gets Sick Over Sex and the City

Shoe designer Manolo Blahnik is in a love-hate relationship with Sex and the City.
“If people talk to me about Sex and the City, I get sick…It’s sweet but it becomes too much and I don’t feel comfortable. I have never wanted to be a celebrity designer.”
Although he gripes about the show that made his name synonymous with expensive, fashionable, well-made shoes, the British designer admits that it does help keep the line in business.
“Well, we had a very good year last year, thanks to those stupid satin shoes [worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the movie]. That shoe saved our company.”
Talk about being grateful.

Sass and Bide Plan UK Anniversary
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Fashion Designers, Fashion Shows, News, Women
Sass and Bide will celebrate its 10th anniversary at London Fashion week. The quirky Australian clothing label will return to the British fashion scene this September to pay tribute to the city where designers Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton founded the business idea.
The designers said: “Ten years ago the concept for Sass and Bide was born in London. To be returning here ten years later, showing in a city that we love so much and that fuels our creativity, is really exciting.”
The Sydney-based pair—whose celebrity fans include Lindsay Lohan and Russell Brand—will host their show on Friday September 18 at 7:15pm in central London.
As well as marking the label’s landmark birthday, London Fashion Week will also be celebrating its 25th anniversary. British Fashion Council chairman Harold Tillman said he and his colleagues are “delighted” about the joint celebration. He explained:
“We are delighted that Sass and Bide will show their collection in London this season. The company has built a strong international following over the past decade and they are a great addition to our schedule as we both celebrate landmark anniversaries.”
Miley Cyrus Brings ‘High Fashion’ to Middle America
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Celebrities, Fashion Designers, Fashion Shows, News, Sales, Girls
In what can only turn out to be a coma-inducing interview in next month’s issue of Elle, Miley Cyrus talks about her “fashion line” for Wal-Mart:
“Oh my God, I’m so stoked! It’s a lot of peasanty, flowy tops, hippie and loose and sexy, like boho chill mixed with English-rocker-esque. Plaids, studs, rips, cool colors. The jeans are my favorite part of the entire line. Because, like, literally, this is going to good for, like, Middle America, and it will be great for kids that really want to be in fashion but they don’t have it available.”
After reading that remark, I greatly laud any journalist who has interviewed that girl. Kids who want to be in fashion but don’t have it available? It’s called thrift stores and the internet, Miley. But wait, there’s more!
“I would pay $500 for the jeans that we make for $20,” she said. “I’m really into high fashion.” I died a little inside when I read that. Christian Lacroix most likely put on his last couture show yesterday, and Miley Cyrus puts out a line for Wal-Mart and has the audacity to claim that she is really into high fashion. Will her egregious reign ever end?

Chanel Fall 2009 Ads Leak
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Fashion Designers, Fashion Shows, Models, Women, Bottoms, Dresses, Tops

It seems as if Chanel is suffering the same fate Louis Vuitton is experiencing with their Madonna ads. Two images (check out the second after the jump) of the famed fashion house’s Fall 2009 campaign were recently leaked on the web.
Heidi Mount and Freja Beha Erichsen star in the campaign, which was conveniently shot by Karl Lagerfeld at his Vermont estate (this is not the first time he has used this location).
A sexy, more fashionable version of Little House on the Prairie comes to mind. What do you think?
